We had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the most talented punjabi bridal makeup artists in the industry, Pawan Sekhon, for an exclusive interview on our website, Wedding Punjab. Here, we dive into her journey, inspirations, favorite techniques, and invaluable tips for brides-to-be.
Q: Can you tell us about your journey into the world of bridal makeup artistry and your biggest influences in the makeup industry?
That’s my most favorite question to answer. A little about myself: My father always wanted me to be an officer, and I had a huge love for studying law, so I pursued a bachelor’s degree in law. I topped my university and then started preparing for civil exams. Last year, in 2023, I cleared the ADA (Assistant District Attorney) and PCS (J) preliminary examinations and was selected to sit for the mains examination. However, due to some reasons, I was unable to take the mains examination. Both were my very first attempts. Meanwhile, I always told my father that I could secure a government job but wouldn’t be able to carry it throughout my life. My inclination was always towards something of my own, and deep down, I shared a love for makeup. That’s how I ended up here, and to be honest, I am LOVING IT! Even in my free time, I still enjoy reading case laws. I believe your education matters the most wherever you go in life. Keep educating yourself and never stop learning. My love for aesthetics in day-to-day life has drawn me towards makeup artistry. My biggest influences are Meera Sakhrani domestically and Makeupbymario internationally.

Q. What are your favorite makeup techniques or trends right now?
My current favorites are ombre brows and flushed skin work. These techniques provide a natural yet polished look that brides absolutely adore.

Q. Can you share a makeup tip or trick that every bride should know?
For brides-to-be: Use three coats of mascara for a fluttery eye look without using lashes for post-wedding events. And, avoid salon-based facials (both pre- and post-wedding).

Q. Can you describe any memorable or challenging makeup project you worked on and how you handled it?
Oh God! I still remember when I was doing my first bridal makeup and my bride started crying in the middle while I was setting her base. It’s such an emotional day for a girl, and seeing her cry made me so emotional, but I had to act promptly. So, I calmed her down somehow and had to re-do her base. Because my bride is showcasing my work, if I had just fixed it, it would have jeopardized the outcome, and I never compromise on that.

Q. What are your must-have makeup products in your kit?
Must-haves: A good mascara, brow gel, liquid blush, dewy concealer, and my favorite lip gloss, especially Fenty Beauty ones. Love them!
Dewy MAKE UP
Q. What advice would you give to brides-to-be when choosing their wedding day makeup?
I would suggest looking for quality work instead of followers or how hyped that artist is. Because at the end of the day, you need good work to make your day special.
Expert Make up Tips
Q. Can you share a few dos and don’ts for bridal makeup?
Do’s:
A nice skin prep according to skin type decides the longevity of your makeup. Plus, it provides a pampering feeling to your bride. What else does she need – a calming experience and nice makeup.
Don’t:
Moderation is key to everything. So be it skin prep or makeup application, keep everything moderate.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a makeup artist?
Oh, I love traveling early in the morning, having coffee on the run, and watching the sunrise. Besides that, the glow on my brides’ faces as they become a bride and step into a new phase of their lives is the guiding force. The kind of love I receive from them and their families is truly heartwarming.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that guides your work?
My go-to is ‘LESS IS ALWAYS MORE’. I myself went for a no-foundation look on my wedding. For me, it’s all about enhancement and making skin look younger, fuller, and plumper.
